We learn how to make fires from the witches
First we must use flint to make sparks. We collect those sparks on a bed of tinder. That's where the German expression "to give someone tinder" (light a fire under someone) comes from. And here, that happens without any haste, pressure, or exertion. The sparks fall onto the outstretched tinder. The glowing bed of embers ignites a straw fire. With some skill, we can turn a straw fire into a brushwood/bark fire and finally a bonfire.
What everyone immediately learns...
Before starting with the fire, a variety of initial steps must be prepared (dry tinder, straw, bark, and wood). Starting with campfires – early man tamed fire and made it serve his needs (warmth, cooking, baking, roasting). As your time permits, you can use a stone mill to grind grains into flour. Add water to the flour and knead it into a dough. Then add salt and forest herbs for seasoning, and bake the bread on a stick over the fire.
